Since a part of my work is about developing new things, I would like to share some of outcomes from the recent years with you. On this page you find some technologies I have my fingers (and my brain) in, so I can claim full authorship (e.g., Magpie) or co-authorship (e.g., architectural design of BuddySpace).Magpie: a plugin for semantic navigation
Magpie is a lightweight solution to the challenge of bringing the semantics, i.e., formally captured meaning of terms, to any standard web page. The technology uses the terminology represented in formal ontologies, from which the user selects his or her 'perspective' in the form of a Magpie lexicon. The lexicon is loaded into a standard web browser equipped with a Magpie plugin and appears as an additional toolbar enabling the user to highlight terms in the web page related to the loaded perspective ('lexicon'). For all highlighted terms, Magpie displays right-click menus with services allowing various operations upon the terms. |

Magpie plugin for Mozilla Firefox (MFF) has been tested for MFF versions 1.6, 1.7, 2.x, and 3.0. This is the latest update to get it up-to-date also with MFF version 3!
This is the only plugin that runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems! Download Magpie plugin for Mozilla Firefox |

Updated lexicons for Magpie cover three main themes: climate science (last update Oct 2005), semantic web research support (last update Oct 2007) and
AGROVOC (last update Nov 2008). The ZIP file should be unzipped into your "C:/Magpie" folder (or similar). Download updated Magpie lexicons |

ASPL: services for analyzing communities and publications
ASPL is a web version of the services developed in the KnowledgeWeb project as a demonstrator of the added value semantic technologies and representations may offer in the area of processing and interpreting the relationships between themes, people and publications. Among others, my services are based on the innovative FacetedDBLP developed in the same project, and they support the identification of experts in a given topical area, the identification of key venues where one can find publications on a given topic, the thematic analysis of the communities of co-authors and the accelerated access to the publications of given individuals (active in the area of web and semantic technologies), in comparison with some competition, e.g., Google Scholar or CiteSeer. |

BuddySpace: multi-platform messenger
BuddySpace is an instant messenger with four novel twists: (1) it allows optional maps for geographical and office-plan visualizations in addition to standard 'buddy lists'; (2) it is built on open source Jabber, which makes it interoperable with ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and others; (3) it is implemented in Java, so it is cross-platform; (4) it is 100% free with full sources readily available. The concept of presence has matured in recent years to move away from the simple notion of 'online/offline/away', towards a rich blend of attributes that can be used to characterise an individual's physical and/or spatial location, work trajectory, time frame of reference, mental mood, goals, and even intentions. |

NeOn Toolkit: Ontology engineering in practice
NeOn Toolkit is an extensible ontology engineering environment. It is part of the reference implementation of the NeOn architecture and contains plugins for ontology management and visualization. The core features include: basic editing of ontologies in OWL and FLogic, basic visualization and ontology browsing support, and import/export into F-Logic, (subsets of) RDF(S) and OWL. |
NeOn Toolkit is currently in version 1.2, which includes support for OWL, and is available for Windows, and to some extent also Linux and Mac OS X. Download NeOn Toolkit (v1.2) |

NeOn Toolkit is our Open Source development in the scope of the NeOn project, and we are all happy to share our source
code with you – via OntoWare. Source code for NeOn Toolkit (v1.2) |
